Three cheers

From Wisconsin Public Radio:
(MADISON) A legislative proposal to get rid of Wisconsin’s same-day voter registration could be dead for this session. Assembly Campaigns and Elections Committee Chair Steven Freese said at a public hearing for the plan that he does not intend to bring it up for a vote. Those who want to end Wisconsin’s same-day registration say it creates headaches for election clerks and makes it more likely that ineligible voters will be allowed to cast ballots. But supporters say it’s a valuable tool to get people to the polls. Brian Tanner is with United Council, which represents University of Wisconsin students. He says it’s hard to get students signed up to vote in advance. He says the goal is to get the students registered as soon as possible, but the reality is that if many will be living at a different location on campus or in the city by the fall. Wisconsin is one of six states that have same-day registration. It had the second-highest overall voter turnout in the nation in the 2004 Presidential
election.
Note to Republicans - The last sentence is caused by the second to the last sentence - Something we should be proud of and not attempting to reverse.
