Changes at UW

While I still think state legislators should not go overboard in their reaction to the audit that found 40 felons working within the 42,000 employees of the UW system, I have to admit that one of the things the audit found is troubling. The audit found an employee that had embezzled from her old employer working with money at the UW. The UW provides good jobs, was there really no one else more qualified that applied?

I had just went through a lengthy defense of the UW with one of my conservative friends on Saturday and then this story hits. He is part of the UW-Madison alumni as well but has real concerns with what he sees in the paper. Much of what the Republicans in the legislature rant about with the UW is just showboating, but why does the UW system make it so hard to defend them sometimes?

I think the UW will use the audit well and come up with better hiring practices. Susan Lampert-Smith also thinks the audit will help the UW and has a column on the topic here.
