Dane County Food Council Timely

The Dane County Board has announced the members of a new Food Council to advise the County on food issues. I'm not sure why it took two years to put together or why Supervisor Kyle Richmond would brag about that in the press release, but they are going to work on some very important issues and could make a big impact.

One of the topics they will be working on is hunger and judging by a front page story in the Wisconsin State Journal (not available online), area food banks could use a helping hand. Madison are food banks are doing ok now but food bank operators across the country are reporting food shortages because demand has increased but donations have dropped. Hats off to area food banks that have come up with creative ideas to keep the food shelves stocked so far this season in spite of decreased donations. But is making sure people have enough to eat something we as a country want to force food banks to do?

So here's an idea. Next time you go grocery shopping, get a few extra items and drop them off at a food bank. Don't know where to take them? Here is the Dane County Food Bank Network list or call the Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin at 608-246-4730 and they can tell you.
