Security or morality crisis in the capitol?

What could cause the Wisconsin State Assembly to lock the doors of the chamber and post a police officer at the one open door?

A suspicious package? No, gay people.

Seriously. About 30 gay people gathered outside the assembly chamber to watch the debate and vote on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and civil unions put the assembly in lock down status yesterday. This was done on the order of Speaker John Gard. What did the gay people do? They were just there. That's all it took.

In one of my previous posts, I called the folks in state government pushing this amendment the terrified "I see gay people" crowd as a joke. I guess I was right on the money with that statement.

Now contrast that with the day when they were trying to override the governor's veto of the concealed carry legislation. You would think if there was any day to put the chamber on lock down, it would be the day you are saying people should be able to carry concealed weapons. But no, on that day the doors were wide open and the rooms around the chamber were full of people itching to carry a concealed weapon.

What exactly were the Republicans afraid of? That some of the committed gay people in the crowd might wear off on them and make them stay married to their second or third spouse? Rep. Pocan asked if they were afraid the gay people were going to rush the chamber and give members a makeover.

Let's hope the chamber does get a makeover this November.
