My predictions for the school board race

I received another campaign piece in the mail yesterday from Lucy Mathiak. It did not have Maya Cole, a candidate running for the other seat on the school board, on it this time. A wise move on her part.

Will she win? My gut says yes. I think Arlene Silveira is going to win seat one and Lucy Mathiak is going to win seat two in the school board races today.

Arlene Silveira is better qualified, has run a better campaign, and seems to have built a big base of support. Maya Cole is a pretty good candidate but how can folks vote for someone that won't answer one of the biggest questions the school board will face? She never really answered whether or not she could support building a new school at a time when the school district population is steady, but not really growing much.

Juan Jose Lopez has been a good member of the school board but he has barely run a campaign from what I can tell. Perhaps he is targeting different areas of the city and I just haven't seen it. Combine that with the fact that I think voters still haven't gotten out all of their anger over the last school referendum, and you have the makings of an incumbent getting beat. Lucy Mathiak has run an aggressive campaign and has locked down the endorsement of both newspapers.

Voters will split the difference and vote for 'change' with Mathiak but vote for Silveira to keep the 'other side' heard.
