Does President Bush really want immigration reform?

Someone called into the Ed Schultz show today on 92.1 and told a story that should really leave folks questioning whether President Bush wants immigration reform or just wants to beat up on immigrants to score points with some of the folks in the Republican base.

The IRS used to have a program that matched Social Security numbers to all sorts of facts like birthdates and places of residence to try to find numbers that were being abused by illegal workers. The IRS would then alert the companies and tell them that they had another quarter to clear up the questionable Social Security number. The program was tracking down about one million problematic numbers a year.

The IRS no longer uses this program. Why you might ask? President Bush dismantled the department that handled this pretty much as soon as he got into office. Why would he do that? Because the Chamber of Commerce asked him to do it.

So you tell me if President Bush seriously wants to reform immigration or beat up on people trying to make life better for their families just to score points with a base he is quickly losing on almost every other issue.
